MINES & GEOLOGY
The Department of Mines & Geology was segregated from the Department of Industries in the year 1989. The main activity of the Department is to earn revenue from Scientific exploitation of Mineral wealth available in the State which is necessary for the sustainable development of society and to check their illegal extraction. It is ensured that due to mining activity their may not be any pollution and degration of ecology.
Only three Minor Minerals viz. Jamuna Sand, Brick Earth and Ordinary Clay are available in this District.
Contracts for the extraction of Jamuna Sand are granted for a period of five years as per the provisions of Punjab Minor Mineral Concession Rule, 1964. In order to have a smooth, hassel free and scientific mining of sand without any pollution and ecological loss to District Panipat as whole has been made as "one unit". At present the contract for the extraction of sand from District Panipat has been granted to M/S Ashok Chandak & Co. @ Rs.3,90,51,000/- per annum for the period upto 31.03.2008. The contractor is allowed to operate mining activity in only 4 village of the District at a time.
For the extraction of Brick Earth, permits are issued to the Brick Kiln Owners for two years. After every two years these permits are renewed for next two years. Fixed royalty is charged from Brick Kiln Owners in advance in the month of April every Year @ Rs.18,000/-, 15,000/-, 12,000/- & Rs.3750/- for categories A, B, C & D respectively of the Brick Kiln.
Short Term Permits (Max. upto 30days period) for excavation of ordinary clay are being issued from January, 2007 for the intending persons. The rate of royalty of Ordinary Clay is charged @ Rs. 3.00 per Meteric Ton.
